E.L.Kadethum 1954 Bulter lorenz (29) May 24 Stremm Meadow, 4000 ft., Rosanite Valley, Mariposa Co., Calif. Pond A now has dropped to low level, maximum depth 5" in middle. A 3-4 feet wide ring of dead grass surrounds the pool, probably resulting largely from the drying. New grass growth in the pond rises 14-16" above the water surface. The oil slick has disappeared but the remaining water is increasingly stagnant. The first 15 shot sweeps with a hand dip net revealed Hydra toads only. It took me nearly ½ hour to collect a 10 toad tadpole sample. As before, the Bulfer toads seem to remain at the shallower pool margins. I picked up no toad toads in water over 4" deep. If my sweeps were at random 1 in 25 or 30 toads is a Bulfo. Air temp. over lightly damp grass 14°C. at 7:45 P.M. (P.S.) Water 21.8° C. Pond A, shallower pools in this meadow are virtually all dried up and the toads are flourishing in shallow ½" deep water. One such pool 5X3 yards long just E of pond A has less than a square foot of surface water. Maximum depth <1". Approximately 50 Hydra toads are flourishing about; the most advanced are 3/4" body length and have limb buds developed. The bottom of this pool is irregular yet no dead toads appear on the dried up parts of it. Original pond depth probably 5" maximum. Former similar shallow pond just north of pond A also down to few inches depth.
