Journal R.E. Johnson 1968 Jan. 27 Tilden Regional Park, Alameda Co., California (cont.) Species seen: Ruby-crowned Kinglet - calling with short horse short churr from willows along the edge of the lawn. Brown Towhee - scratching on ground under trees during snow storm Golden-crowned Sparrow - in loose aggregation on lawn during rain with Brown Towhees on lawn during rain Fox Sparrow Song Sparrow - also under trees feeding & scratching during snowstorm Oregon Junco Robin - lone individuals widely scattered on lawn Scrub Jay several Valley Quail - along margin of lawn during rain storm. Heard occasionally throughout morning Varied Thrush - one on ground at lawn - conifer margin. Bewick's Wren - in bushes, flowers, limbs during snow storm oak Wren-tit Hutton's Vireo Chestnut-backed Chickadee - several together in oak Plain Titmouse - two foliage & twigs (not in tree tops) during snowstorm Hermit Thrush - forages on ground under oaks during snowstorm & laurel in leaves, but rarely scratches with feet. Walks or runs & pecks quickly.
