Up late after a much-needed rest.
Weather was bad: fog and rain. No
good for Tipulio transect, so drove out
with Edna and Tom to try to trap ptarmigan.
Next East of AACS was hatching—watched
a bird crawl out of the egg. Left Tom
there to try the decoy fall trap and drove
to the nest on Pitelka's Plot to dry the
bow net. Set it and spent 20 minutes
untangling the darn string, then drove
to shooting station to pick up Beverly.
Back to the nest—nothing, so brought
the trap back. Found that Tom had
left the trap set at the AACS nest
and gone in. The adults had not
gone on the nest, and 1 young was
death, another nearly so. Removed the
trap and drove in. As long as we could
see the adult did not get on the nest.
Next took mist net and several
hardware cloth strips with monofilament
loops out to the nest South of FDA.
Found the bird still incubating, and caught
it with the mist net. Drove in and fed
this and a ? pectoral that Tom caught
in the trapline. (gave them 6 Tipula
