Maclean 1967 Journal [2 August] to the muck. Collected [illegible] cores to try several extraction techniques. Saw and collected an immature stilts Sandpiper from one of these ponds, as well as 1 alpine and 1 pusilla. Ponds has many phalaropes, fewer pusilla, still fewer alpina and A. interpres. Went to Dr. W. Smith's for [illegible] crab and spaghetti dinner, but left party early to go to lab. Processed today's specimens, then went out to collect 500 samples of mesic tundra for berle's extraction. For the first time this year tundra has a frozen surface which cracked under foot. Took 8 cores from area West of Micro Msr., 8 from Beach Ridge, North slope, East of Micro Msr. Returned, placed these into funnels, then home to bed. 3 August Barrow, Alaska Spent the morning and early afternoon hand-picking all 16 blasted 500 cores from last polygon trough and central marsh collection. Trough sample berle's removed 13/14, or 93%. Not so good in the marsh: 1/4 Pedicia over 10mm) or 75%. Still acceptable, we thinks. Next tried hand picking, washing,
