20 July (finally) get moving on habitat transect
work. Placed a 1 km grid over a
map of our study area - down to
lower Gasline Ridge and Okpik Slough
and West to Village Ridge and
Village Lagoon. this gives about 48
complete 1 km lengths that can be
used for transects. Decided to try
procedure of randomly selecting a
kilometer from the grid and walk
along it evaluating the habitat (using the
feeding observation scheme) at 5 m.
intervals, giving 200 points per km. Mims'd
a data sheet for this and in the
afternoon went out with FAP and
Dan to try it out on a km. starting
at North Mesnow Lake and heading
West toward mouth of Family Creek.
After first 100 points (1/2 km) decided
to reduce the number of sample
points to 100 / km (One each 10 m.).
Using this system we did the last
1/2 km in just < 1/2 hour. In general
we all agreed well in categorizing the
sites - encouraging for feeding observations.
Dan and I will begin tomorrow morning
and try to complete at least 4 km/day
for the next 6 days. We will have to
