Saw the plovers and sent them off to
Fairbanks. Called Institute of Arctic Biology
and learned that yesterday's birds arrived
in good shape.
Spent the rest of the morning and
early afternoon counting, cleaning, and
preparing tanglefoot strips, then went
out with Tom and Dan. It was
now very foggy - visibility not > 200
m. I spent some time introducing Tom
to feeding observations while Dan changed
site I. Emptied the pit-fall cans and
took down the winnow system to bring
in the spacer pieces for modification, then
drove on. Passed a flock of ca. 30 alpina
near Micro-Met and another of ca. 30
melanotos on the Beach Ridge. Changed
these boards. Numbers 3 and 4 were
under water and had to be relocated on
drier ground.
In the evening went to lab with Ewa
and sorted and counted hand and vacuum
picked tipulid samples and can-trap sample
from today. Vacuum motor failed to
pick up most tipulids - especially wingless
& Tipula and Pedicia. Hand picked samples
contained proportionately fewer & tipula
than can-trap samples.
