Remsen, J.V. 1973 Arctic Tern Stern paradisaeq Aug 5 Bay Bridge Toll Plaza, Alameda Co., Calif: Two ads. in full breeding plumage. Scanning over a group of 50 Forstels Terns, my eye was caught by a very gray-bellied tern. It looked smaller and shorter legged and I im- mediately thought Arctic Tern. After seeing that it had a very short, red bill, I was sure I was right. All present got to see all the field marks on this bird and another located late. In comparison to Forstels Terns, they were obviously smaller, grayer belled, darker- winged, and rounder, smaller-headed, but most conspicuous was the shorter bill and legs. They were seen later in the day by John + Susanne Luther. Sight record report follows Sep-15 San Diego offshore boat trip: 2 adults Oct 6 Monterey Bay boat trip: 1 beautiful ad. with very short bill and head, very long tail, gray underparts. 3 immatures with similar shape also probably Arctics
