upperside of tail: Mostly white except for [illegible] black tip and some dark in center. Very
strikingly white, much more so than Lapland
Underside of tail: not seen
1-7:
can't remember
Behavior: feeding very tamely in pasture. Walking.
Voice: A rich warbled chirping call, very different from either the rattle or the clear whistle
note given by the Laplands. They could easily be located by the different call
Habitat: heavily grazed cattle pasture
How identification was decided - elimination of similar species:
not Lapland because
1- call note different
2- plumage differences - much
less contrastingly marked
3- too much white in tail
4- definitely smaller
not McCown's because
1- call not different
2- no rusty patch at bend of wing at rest
or in flight
Prior experience with this species and similar species: Breeding plumage birds only, in Colorado
