underside of tail: same as Townsends
Legs Dark
Behavior: Found twice feeding amongst flowers of Eucalyptus, 75' up in canopy and also located feeding deliberately amongst Monterey cypress foliage about 15' up. Seemed to move slightly more deliberately than Townsend's Warbler. Acrobatics in flowers allowed us to get very good looks at the back.
Voice: Silent except for a chip note heard once which was recognizably different from both Townsend's and Hermit
Habitat: Suburban residential area with lush growth, dense trees -- eucalyptus, pepper, cypress -- on coastal promontory
How identification was decided -- elimination of similar species:
Townsends, Hermit, and Townsends x Hermit hybrid eliminated because --
1. Bright green (not olive or gray-green) back noted by all observers -- conspicuous
2. No white on breast or belly eliminates Townsend's
3. Very faint cheek marks eliminate Townsend's
4. Very conspicuous black chest eliminates Hermit and probably all Townsends tho tire of them
5. The yellow patches to the outside of the thighs on the flanks are apparently diagnostic; after looking at MV2 collection of these warblers, almost all Blakell-thr Greens show this but none of the Townsend's or Hermits do. This mark was though definitely not to be present until we finally got an incredibly good view of the bird (40' at 15' up in tree).
after looking at extensive series in MV2, I'm not convinced that there isn't a moderate amount of overlap between immns. of Townsend's and BT Greens in back color.
Prior experience with this species and similar species: About 10 breeding 88's in Mass in 1965-66 but none since. My first in Calif and my first in fall plumage
