Portland - Oct. 4 I understood Jewett to say his collection numbers 10,000 birds and 350 mammals. I was astonished at the extraordinary 'record' specimens included as well as at the total number. For 30 years he has watched out for good things, as well as quantity, using his opportunities under the Biol. Serv., travelling about, and contacts with game trappers and hunters, to get good things. For example, I saw 8 Oregon Caithm. Peale Falcons, big series of Rough-legs, a long series of Sora (Owl), representing Brewsteri (seems to be a good form), Kennerdite, and noefarlanii (from eastern Oregon), great numbers of shore-birds (for example, fully 40 surf birds!). Jewett several times remarked on the unsafety of his collections. All are in wooden cases worn through the years by himself; and bugs show themselves every so often with some resulting damage. Part of the cases are in an upstairs room at his home in East Portland, part in his cement-walled basement, the rest part in the Biol. Serv. office rooms in the Federal Bldg. Now that Jewett is stationed at Malheur, Mr. W. R. Bush, Predatory Animal and Rodent Control
