grass leaves on its dead mate, uttering mournful low squeaking murmurs. I watched it for ten minutes but failed to locate the nest. It seemed to consider its work done when it delivered the grass to the dead mate, though it was plainly puzzled by the unresponsiveness of its mate; would depart for another blade of grass & return. It did this 4 times in ten minutes. The shortest blade brought was about 9" in length, the longest 12", all were thoroughly dry & curly. I eventually shot it also + then searched closely for the nest but failed to find it. I believe they nest in turrocks or amongst ferns as those were the only possible places for it to hunt in that locality. Its nest + habits are probably akin to Megalurus of Australia. 17/6/39. Not as noisy as usual. few calls, few seen, extremely shy & nervous. 19/6/39. Behaviour normal. Moved out from wetter to dryer parts of its haunts because of rainy wetness of grass areas. 20/6/39. Behaviour usual + lath when dryer birds moved into wet areas again
