Pine Grosbeak
June 19 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1/2 mi. SSW Donner Pass Glacier
Co. Calif - Characteristics "twit-t-a-nut" calls of this
species heard in red fir - lodgepole + silver pine forest.
June 29 7100 ft., Annie's Donner Pass Glacier Co. Calif - while leading
a group of Audubon campers along the Sierra Crest ski trail
SE of Mary L., where the dense forest of Summit
Valley begins to break up into patches alternating
with chaparral + rocks of N end of mt. Judah,
a pair of Pine Grosbeaks were found - followed
to a NEST. Observations at its nest over
1 hr. 40 min. (total time) are attached below,
being copied from my original notes (was without
official notebook at the time) by an Audubon camper,
a back checked by me.
Observation of
PINE GROSBEAK
June 29, 1950.
Observations by Group A
0850 Pair flew south from direction of Mary Lake. Alighted in group
of two red firs and four lodge poles all about 50 - 55 ft. high.
(3/4 by subsequent measure)
Female went on to rim of nest situated 22 ft. up and four feet but
from trunk, on south east side of a red fir. Nest in lowermost
two ft. wide spray of fir needles at edge of 30 ft. diameter opening
of forest.
0904 Female raised up head preened left side of breast.
0904 1/2 Settled down again.
0907 Preened again, turned and resettled.
0910 Turned again facing north.
0911 Female stood up when one of group whistled - then resettled.
0913 Preened breast feathers.
0915 Douglas squirrel called a few trees away.
0918 Female stood up, yawned and resettled.
0919 1/2 Male commenced singing a few trees away. Female turned head this
way and that.
0920 Female stood up, turned eggs. Male still singing every 5-6 seconds.
0924 1/2 F. stood up again, head far down ventrally, feathers fluffed. (preening?)
0925 F. preened under right wing, then resettled. M. singing somewhat more
softly.
0926 M. flew to bare twig in sun just outside needle spray containing Nest.
1/2 min later M. hopped to north rim of nest and fed F. by series
of 5 - 10 bill contacts. F. stayed on nest, turning head to left to
receive food.
0927 M. hopped to bare branch within canopy of tree, then flew off to west.
F. facing south now again opens & closes bill.
0929 F. opens & closes bill.
0930 F. stood up, bent head down, opens & closes bill. Settles down facing
west.
Break in observation until 1105.
