Cognwell 1950 Parus gambeli July 5 7100 ft., 3/4 mi. W Donner Pass, Placer Co. Calif - 3+ seen flying several hundred feet at a time across shrub covered & bare slopes between scattered Jeffrey pines & white firs. Is this post-nesting dispersal? - 5650 ft, Cisco Grove on S Fork Yuba R., Placer Co. Calif - 1 heard in lodgepole & Jeffrey pines on flat near cottonwood - willow riparian woodland. July 6 6800 ft. Near Norden R.R. Sta., Placer Co. Calif - The pair at nest discovered on July 4 were watched by 2 groups of people from the Audubon camp. Their original records are inserted after this page. The young in the nest are obviously nearly ready to leave. [were gone by next evening] July 11 6800 - 6700 ft, Ice Lakes S along am. Div Canyon Rd., Placer Co. Calif - 3 heard singing in early a.m. in conifers. July 12 8730 ft., 1.2 mi. SSE Mt. Rose, Washoe Co. Nev - 1 seen in 1 hr. spent in < 1/2 mi. of subalpine forest [see June 17]. mid-July late July near Sugar Bowl Lodge & other "Donner Pass" areas - 1 to 5 encountered on all field trips (2 hrs each, usually) which encompassed any forest areas. Singing has definitely ceased except for a few early in a.m. (July 20). early Aug. a "flock" of 5+ (family?) was noted on 25th. ditto - but seemingly somewhat more numerous with in forest by the lodge (about 30 in 1 1/2 hrs there on 3rd). Aug. 7 14 counted in about .6 mi. of dense red fir - lodgepole a silver pine forest traversed between 3 to 4:30 pm. none are singing now.
