Hampshire Rocks Camp Ground, 5900 ft., on S Fork Yuba River, Placer Co., Calif. -- in eastern portion of Sec. 27, R 13 E, T 17 N; about 9 mi. W Donner Pass.
VEG. TYPES: mixed conifer (Pinus murrayana, Pinus jeffreyi, Abies magnifica, Abies concolor) and riparian woodland (Populus tremuloides, P. trichocarpa, Ceanothus cordulatus, Salix sp., Cornus californica, etc.). Upland shrub areas (Arctostaphylos patula, Ceanothus cordulatus, C. velutinus, etc.) are extensive on S-facing slope across the highway (beyond strip of forest) but were not covered in our visits. Stream itself is here a series of deep pools separated by low waterfalls & short rapids (not very turbulent).

High Meadow, 7800 ft., Carson Range, eastern Eldorado Co., Calif. -- 2 1/8 mi. N by W Freel Peak (q.v.), 5 mi. SE of SE end Lake Tahoe.
VEG. TYPES: coniferous forest (Pinus murrayana, Abies magnifica, and ? Pinus monticola), with stringers of it (chiefly P. murrayana) here & there on the low sedge meadow; riparian groves (Populus tremuloides).
VISITS: July 9 (meadow viewed from 1/4 mi. away on Cold Creek Road); July 23, including hike to Star Lake from meadow
Ice Lakes Camp Ground, 6900 ft., just E of Serena L. & N of Dulzura L. as shown on Truckee USGS topo map (these 2 lakes now called "Ice Lakes"), Placer Co., Calif. -- approx. 3 mi. W, 1 mi. S Donner Pass; in Secs. 26, 27, 34, 35 of R 14 E, T 17 N.
VEG. TYPES: coniferous forest (Pinus murrayana, Abies magnifica) in moderate to dense stands, except where broken or adjacent to: low sedge-forb-grass meadows; riparian thickets (Salix sp.) near lake. Forest upslope (S-facing) to NE is more open, with shrubs similar to those of Donner Pass (q.v.); open lake with aquatic vegetation moderately abundant in late summer.
VISITS: June 29 (included hike around both lakes, which are confluent in middle); July 22; Aug. 10 (included hike along ridge from Crow's Nest peak, q.v., & into camp ground from NE); Aug. 24.
Idlewild Park, 4500 ft., Reno, Washoe Co, Nev. -- this city park, located along the Truckee River near W end of town, was used for our group trips (4 station wagons of campers) for rest room purposes; but certain notes on waterfowl present on the lake (incl. wild Branta canadensis) or song birds in shade trees are recorded.
