Coggswell 1949 Journal 79 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Aug. 22 (cont.) in the dry grassy area on the ridge top. Then I dropped down into the oak woodland (with occas- ional poison oak - gooseberry shrubs) on the SW fac- ing slope. This area is moderately grazed by sheep and there are many of their trails ground into the steeper ridges. Some small talus slopes are present and several rock outcrops. The border of the Douglas Fir forest can be seen beyond the oak belt, down the slope about 1/2 mi. from the road. There are some Redwoods in it also. Species noted in the oak woodland or its border with the grassland were: Scolopax occidentalis - several Catantites aura - 2, overhead Butor Jamaicensis - 1 imm., 1 ad. Salio sparrwerg - 2 Columba fasciata - several, flying. Colaptes cafer - 1 Balansophyla formicivora - 2+ Hendrocopos willoses - 1 " " pubescens - 1 * Empedoxas [illegible] - 1+ (collected) = Virio soletannus " " ? - 2 Cyanocitta stelleri - several Capalocomo caeruleons - 5 Seals mexicana - 5 (*: see species acct) * Sporomix tolweli - 1 (collected) Diaranga ludoviciana - 2 & * Gasserina amorna - 1 ? + young (4 collected) Spinus penins - several * Diplo maculatus - 4" imm.
