French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
Aug.22 (cont.) and along fences & road sides. I had hoped
To find Horned Larks in the stubble fields, but
none were located. One area of partly mowed,
partially standing green grain attracted numbers
of swallows (4 species, see list pp.86,88) and Vaux
Swifts. Chipping and Savannah Sparrows were
common along road sides & fences, Two Bay Sevanals
being collected (see species account). A flock of
10 and a flock of 4 mourning Doves were seen
in the stubble fields & road; they were quite
many. At least 5 Sparrow Hawks were seen,
also, 1 Red-tailed Hawk & several Turkey Vultures
& 1 Raven — but no other birds associated
directly with the open fields.
This locality is on the Anton Lyons Ranch, which
continues near Schoolhouse Creek with the Joe
Monegas Ranch [labelled "Tomlison Bros." on 1945
map] intervening. The Monegas Ranch is more
intensively farmed, with grain planted &
cattle in some of the fields. It was here that
the large number of Ravens were seen on the 19th,
but today only 1 flew over, followed by a
flock of 9 somewhat later.
Not having permission to hunt on the Monegas
Ranch, I resumed on the Lyons property
1 mi. NW of Schoolhouse Creek, where I collected
a Meadowlark (see spec't) & noted Sparrow Hawks
& 1 Barn Swallow.
