Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif.
Aug. 15 (cont.) I left 39 traps on the same line
near Ritcher Creek as the previous night. Those
left were in the Ribus & Sambucus thickets,
along the old bed of the stream + 3 adjacent
to the present stream.
Nighthawks were seen over camp in the evening.
Aug. 16 on the Ritcher Creek trap line (39 traps), caught
the following:
- Microtus californicus - 2 (see species acc.)
Zapus trinotatus - behind tree trunk adjacent to
stream bank, but backed by dense Ribus thicket.
Peromyscus maniculatus - 1 ad. J, 1 im. J,
The abrupt drop in the take on this line as
compared with the previous night is perhaps
significant. The second night was clearer,
howerer, than the first.
Murray & I arrived at the abandoned ranch
on the west side of the ridge E. of the lagoon about
7:45 a.m. & took up our traps. In the 20
I set along a small draw with small alder,
clumps & bushes (see yesterday's journal) the following
were caught:
Peromyscus maniculatus - 1 ad. J, 1 ad. Q, + 1 im.
very much eaten by some animal after being caught.
Sorex trowbridgi - 1 [illegible] (see species acc.)
about 2:45
In the afternoon I walked up the slope across the
bog pond from camp (& S. side of valley) & took
photos of the valley which should show our text
