Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif.
Aug. 15
Caught the following mammals in trap line set,
last night
in V- traverse which crossed Pitcher Creek at two
points, with traps # 1-6 & 47-53 being near the
grassy old logging road & all others well within
the Rubus spectabilis & R. parviflorus thickets.
Peromyscus maniculatus - 3 ad. ♂, 5 ad. ♀, 2 juv. ♂
(some in traps in open areas, fewer (only?)
at deepest part of thicket traversed)
Sorex trowbridgii - 1
Sorex pacificus - 2
Zapus trinotatus - 1
see species accounts.
on the return to camp thru the thickets of the pasture
I took an immature Spinus tristis (7492 miller)
from flock of 150+ which were in the thickets & flew up to alders.
About 2:30 p.m. Murray & I drove to the
ranch with abandoned house, old barn, & 10
acres or so of grassy slope which is situated
at the end of a dirt road contouring along
the w. slope of the first ridge east of the
lagoon (see map) at 550' altitude.
En route we passed thru
extensive brushy mountainside which I
will describe later.
At the ranch I
set out 20 traps for small mammals, baited with
walnut and oatmeal. The grass is so thin that
I mostly
placed them in the edge of bushes which are here
mostly Asteris agiulina, Rosa sp., Rhododendron ♂,
or dentale
Rhus vitifoliae, and Faultheria shallon.
Toured this
brushland & grass for birds for 45 min. I will list
tomorrow.
