Coppell 1949 Citellus Beecheyi aug. 14, 22 "Bald Wells" NW of Schoolhouse Peak, 2100-2500 ft. Humboldt Co., Calif. Common in the grassland which is grazed by sheep, and fewer in the cultivated (now stubble) fields (manegs Ranch). one heard, "seen calling" near the entrance to its burrow just outside the manegs ranch headquarters was uttering a wheezy "ba-chick" apparently functioning the same way as the much louder clearer "peek", heard in other regions than this. These squirrels were also noted well within the Larry oak woodland below the grassy balds, many having their burrows in the steep hillsides, where they have been worn down to bare earth by the sheep's feet. aug. 24-25 Coyote Creek & ridge S. of it to Arbor Camp Ridge (on 25th), 2400-3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Seemingly less numerous here. The balds here are grazed, but apparently less intensely. During mid-day on the 25th, when the weather was hot, only 1 was seen in 1½ hrs. walk around a large bald & thin oak woods. This one was uttering the same wheezy "ba- chick" noted above. aug. 28 Horse Pinto Creek, 4¾ mi. N & 1¼ mi. E Willow Creek (town), 800 ft. Humboldt Co., Calif. Two here are living in a slight thin area in the Douglas Fir - Tan Oak - Maple Alder, forest near the high bridge across the stream. There is no field or grazed area. one has its hole under at the base of a tan oak, 30 yards away; its bridge.
