Cozowell 1949 Canis latrans Sep. 3 3:50 pm 3 1/4 mi. W Willow Creek, 2700 ft. Humboldt Co., Calif. As Sullon and I were driving up the Three Creek Road here a coyote sprang from the road as we rounded a bend and with about 2 "gallops" had disappeared up slope in the brush. It appeared to be full grown and was quite bright rusty on the head & side of the shoulders, grizzled brown on the rest of the upperparts. The vegetation at its point where it was seen is Douglas Fir - Tan Oak. Madrone forest, but there is a logged off slash area within 1/4 mile downslope and some small areas of ceanothus - manzanita chaparral somewhat farther. It is about 1 1/2 miles from the open pine forest on its upper slopes of Bronnen ranch.
