Cogswell 1949 Melospiza melodia Aug 8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. - Very abun- dant in the more open habitats of the valley: field borders; Quercus thickets, alder-willow riparian woodland, Scirpus marsh (inland border). Also noted, but less commonly, in the herb-small shrub slopes of the 3-year old burn, and in the "chaparral" on the W-facing slope of the first ridge E. of Big Lagoon - to an altitude of 600 ft. A few feeble attempts at song were heard from birds near our camp. Aug 29, {1/2 mi. N Willow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. "30,31} Several were heard calling in the deciduous shrub & briar thickets along a small tribu- tary stream at the border of a woodland area in the Trinity River valley here. None were found in the alder-woodland areas proper.
