Cogswell 1949 Journal 60 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. Aug.13 after crossing the highway at its N. end of the bridge across the lagoon I walked about a mile north along the lagoon shore, which is a gravelly beach with a nice succession of low sedges, some grass, willows (species?), alder, thyrsofibros? & myrica californica, young Picea set- densis, abies grandis, & mature forest of Quila -- in that order, from the water landward. The beach is sandier for short stretches near the mouths of two small streams, which is a small replica of the S.E. end of the lagoon described above. Finally, at about 1 mile N. of the bridge is a rocky promontory coming directly to the water's edge. Collected 2 Cyanocitta stelleri (see species acc't) and 1 immature Larus delawarensis. Also saw or heard the following species: Phalacrocorax sp? (aureitus or pelicillatus) - 7; Melanitta sp.? - 2; Larus californicus - 1 ad.; Larus leemanni - 1, first-year; Columba fasciata - 1; Solasphorus sp. - 1 (flying across to beach); Dendrocopos villosus - 1; Progne subis - 2; Barus rufescens - several; Chamaea fasciata - 4; Regulus color. satrapa - 3; Piranga ludoviciana - 1; melospiza mel- odis. few? Returned to camp at noon, via Hammond Lumber Co. road; collected one more Cyanocitta stelleri (#23) along it. Left 52 traps set since 7:00 p.m. in the Redwoods., alt. 250'
