Cogswell 1949 erythrophthalmus Riparia maculatae. 2 Aug 30, 31 (3/4 mi. N) Willow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. several were heard - a few seen in the same shrub areas as the last few days. (river bottom) Sep. 3 2 1/2 mi. N Willow Creek, 500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. about 10 individuals (estimated) seen or heard among the tall shrubs of manzanita, coffeeberry madrone, - oak in the shrubland border between the oak-madrone forest and open fields of the Battrason Ranch. Most of them were in molt, at least 2's being seen with the head over half white due to abundant pin feathers. Sep. 7 (2 1/2 mi. NNW) Red Mtn., 5300 ft., 14 mi. S Hayfork, Trinity Co., Calif. I heard repeatedly, glimpsed briefly, in the densest portion of the Larvy oak shrubland on the S facing slope of the ridge top here. It would not respond to a call. Sep. 9 (2 mi. N by W) Red Mtn., 5300 ft., 14 1/2 mi. S Hayfork, Trinity Co., Calif.. I heard one calling. (saw the branches moving where it retreats) in the manzanita "chaparral" as in an opening of the pine forest on a saddle of the ridge here. Mullion had just shot at a bird of this species here - failed to find it.
