Cogswell 1949 Loxia curvirostra 1 Aug. 8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. - Several noted regularly in, or flying over, the Spruce-alder & adjacent habitats in Maple Creek Valley. They were seen perched only in Spruce Trees. Maximum no. seen at once = 11. Aug. 24 French Camp 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Yesterday and today crossbills have been singing from the tree tops here. An attempted transcription might be: twee zip, chip ten "til-til-til-til" This performance, often repeated several times in succession, was given by the bird shot but not obtained (see Journal) and by one other also. The call notes, "hip-hip", are a frequent sound here as small groups go flying over. I should have noted on Aug 20 seeing 2 crossbills on the ground at an old camp site just below ours, and observing them eat egg shells left there by campers. They flew up as I approached, but returned when I stepped a bit off. Small bits of the shell while I watched at a distance of 9 feet. They have also been seen coming to the ashes in old camp-fire spots (for minerals? or for dusting?) one was collected this a.m. as it dropped down to drink at the overflow from the pipe from the spring. It had 1 gonad, about 3-4mm. long which was apparently a testis - but I found no other (possibly was damaged beyond recognition)
