Cogswell 1949 Spinus psaltria Aug. 25 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - one flew over in an eastward direction, giving the plaintive call not characteristic of this species. Aug. 29 (4 ½ mi N) Willow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Several were seen in river-bottom woodland & adjacent field & brush border, yesterday p.m. & this a.m. A field-plumaged ? sang lustily yesterday. I collected one this a.m. which was giving a feeble, squeaky song from near the top of a Bay Tree. Aug. 30, 31. many were present in the same area, a flock of 10+ flew in from the south on the 30th & alighted on wires of a new power line which wires had just been placed within the hour previous by line crew work men. The goldfinches then dropped or down to fields adjacent. Sep. 3 2 ½ mi. N Willow Creek, 900 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. 2 flew over fields & shrubland of Batteron Ranch here, in Trinity River valley. Sep. 6-10 (2 ½ mi. NNW) Red Mtn, 5400 ft., 14 mi. S Hayfork, Trinity Co., Calif. Single individuals heard on 3 different days, flying over the barren & show land areas of the ridge top.
