Cogswell 1949 Spizella tricolor Aug. 8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. abundant in the dry pastureland bordering Maple Creek, 1/2 to 1 mi. inland from the S.E. end of the lagoon. They fed on the abundant thistles here (Carduus lanceolatus, C. arvensis), + perched chiefly in the olders & willows. Maximum no. observed = 200+. Aug. 23 Schoolhouse Peak, 2500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. one flew over open grassland & Barry oak woodland, giving its characteristic call. Dr. Pearson reports seeing them on thistles not far from here. Aug 24 - flock of 4 seen flying low over grassland in this same area. Aug 28, 30 2/3 mi. N Willow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. a few are present, with S. psaltria, in the weedy fields bordered by woodland in the Trinity River valley here. They were seen feeding on thistle heads. Sep. 3 2 1/2 mi. N Willow Creek, 500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. 1 flew over - area of oak-madrona forest, tall shrubs, & fields. Sep. 4 Brannan Mtn, 3700 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - several heard (typical flight notes) over the campus below the pine forested ridge here.
