Carpodacus mexicanus
Aug. 13 S.E. end of Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. - 1 seen
on , a flying up from , a gravel bank in bed
of Maple Creek near the marsh. It gave
the nasal call characteristic of this species.
Aug. 31 (2½ mi.N) Yellow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
I collected 1 from the shrub and blackberry
"woodland" at the border of an old walnut orchard here. Several have been observed in this
area for the past 3 days also. They, along with
many other species seem to be attracted by the
ripe blackberries, coffeeberries, and other
fruits which abound here.
Sep. 3 2½ mi. N Yellow Creek, 500 ft., Humboldt Co.,
Calif. I heard calling in area of tall
shrubs, openly spaced, on the Patterson
Ranch here in the Trinity River valley.
