Carpodacus purpureus
400 ft.
Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif.
Aug.17 A male (#33) was collected as it perched on lowe[r]
branches of one of two Rhamnus Purshiana [illegible]
over a wood rat's nest. A young bird of this
species was sitting nearby, fluttering its wings.
Another individual was seen & heard singing 1/4 mi.
to the north. The site of the collection was near the
w. slope of the junction of the "contour" road along the first ridge
E. of the lagoon and the "short-cut" road between
it and Highway US-101 (see map). [illegible] p. 73A)
The vegetation
in general was high chaparral near outliers of
redwood forest (see journal).
Aug.18 Near the junction of roads following the N. fork
of Maple creek & Maple Creek itself, about
1/2 mi. S. of camp, I collected one (=#38) as it
flew down from alders to grassy area with short,
scattered blackberry bushes. Many Rubus stocks
nearby, also willow & spruce trees.
Aug.22 2/3 mi. NW Schoolhouse Peak, 2500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
one in 1st plumage was seen feeding a fledgling
in a small plum orchard here -- at the border
of Douglas Fir - Bay forest and open grassland.
Aug.25 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - 1 flew
over, giving the "pit" call not characteristic of the species.
Aug.28-29 1/2 mi. N Willow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
2 or more, seen in [illegible] berry shrub thicket
and adjacent woodland in Trinity River
valley here (see journal).
