Aug.22 3/4 mi. NW. of Schoolhouse Peak, 2450 ft. Humboldt Co., Calif. I collected one here from an unmoved area of sparse grass averaging 18-20" in height, with a mat of dead grass stems and shorter grasses & herbs covering the ground between the taller stalks. The bird was flushed 3 times and each time settled in this grassland. None were seen in moved areas along the Bald Hills to the NW of here for several miles; but one flushed from a fence post by my approach in a car about 1/4 mi. NW of the site of this collection could have been a different bird. The only call notes heard were the usual low "djert" when flushed.
Aug.25 3/4 mi. NWW Coyote Peak, 2900 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - one was seen in grassland on either side of a row of oaks falling a small gully in the SW-facing slope of the large "prairie" here. I shot at it 3 times, each time on the wing, missed. It was very wary, flushing at a greater distance than the one above, and gave no call notes.
Sep.7 (21/2 mi. NWW) Red Mtn., 5300 ft., 14 mi. S Hayfork, Trinity Co., Calif. I collected one from the bare rocky "bald" on the ridge just above our camp. The area which is more or less shrub free here is about 2 or 3 acres in extent. The bird flew a short distance & alighted on bare ground with head raised high.
