Cogswell 1949 Journal 38 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. aug. 12 (cont.) Base of the hill is mixed alder, spruce trees in nearly closed canopy, with tall ferns, some berry bushes (chiefly salmonberry) and dense herb growth in all more open situations. Bird species noted in this section were: (1. coln below) Band-tailed pigeon - 1 Hairy woodpecker - 1 Downy woodpecker - 1 Empidonax sp.? - 2 -> 1 heard (pecist call) Western Flycatcher - 1 West. Wood Pewee - 5 olive-sided flycatcher - 1 Steller's Jay - 1 (collected <= # 20) Purple Martin - 2+ Chestnut-backed Chickadee - many (but fewer than near camp) Creepers - 1+ Wren, let - 3. Winter Wren - 5+ Swainson Thrush - 20+ Steller's juncos (Kruglet) - many Pileated Warbler - yellow(?) warbler - 1 heard Long Sparrow - few On the base of the hill Vaccinium parviflorum, V. cotion, and salad become important in the shrub layer & salmonberry decreases. Redwood & Spruce are mixed here as the dominants -- and further up it is pure Redwood. Birds seen or heard in this portion are entered by number in column 2 above. Two large, spotted fawns (Odocoileus hemionus) were jumped on the return at the base of the hill. They bounded away with tails up! Shot a Spotted Sandpiper (=# 19) along maple creek near camp. after supper I set 5 traps in a canyon of redwood forest along road uphill from lumber camp.
