Dendroica occidentalis
Aug. 24 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co. Calif.- A group
of 4, at least 2 of which were Os, came thru
the Douglas Fir - Incense Cedar forest of our
camp. They worked gradually northeastward
along the ridge.
Sep. 6 (3 mi. NNW) Red Mtn. 5400 ft., 14 mi. S Hayfork,
Trinity Co. Calif. 1 in 7 plumage seen well
at close range in open pine forest. I
shot at it, but it escaped the shot altho
branches fell from all around it. I had
just checked identification points with
cenoculars, noting the yellow side of
the head (with only a slight dusky area
on the cheek), white belly, wing bars, etc.
Many more of this species may have
been present in this area, as warblers
which gave the "tilp" call not common
to this species and D. nigricees - towards
were heard and sometimes glimpsed frequently,
between Sep. 6 - 10.
