Cogswell 1949 Vermivora celata Big Lagoon, 450 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Aug.17 one was collected (= #32) and another heard calling in the "chaparral" of the W. facing slope on the first ridge E. of the lagoon. The vegetation is described in my journal section, this being in a region of the short fern & salal chaparral with clumps of myrtle and willow in the draws. One was seen on Aug. 16 at 600 ft. alt. about 1 1/2 mi. further south; and I was heard singing in the p.m. of Aug. 15 down slope from today's collection site. Aug.18 One seen in spruce-alder forest understory 1 1/2 mi. inland along maple creek, from the lagoon. Aug.22 Schoolhouse Peak, 2300-2500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. 2 were seen in tarry oak woodland & in the Poison-oak understory of same. Aug.23 1 (immature plumaged) seen in dense grove of tarry oaks with poison oak & Ribes understory. Aug.29} 1 mi. N Willow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Aug.30} I seen in alder woodland canopy along a small stream tributary to Trinity River. Sep.6 (3 mi. NNW) Red Mtn, 5400 ft., 14 mi. S Hayfork, Trinity Co., Calif. - 1 seen in tarry oak border of open pine forest. Sep.9 (2 mi. N by W) Red Mtn, 5500 ft., 14 1/2 mi. S Hayfork, Trinity Co., Calif. 2 (or 3?) were seen in canopy of the dense white fir stand on a N. facing slope here at mid-day. They called occasionally as they foraged over the stick-set needles. One came out in its open when I squealed.
