Cogswell 1949 Vireo solitarius Aug. 17 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif - I was singing in alder trees of Spruce-Alder forest near our camp till p.m. Aug. 19-20-21 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - I heard singing in Douglas fir - Tan oak forest. One was also heard near Schoolhouse Creek, 3 mi. W. of here on Aug. 23 in Harry oak woodland. Aug. 22 SEE NEXT PAGE (1 mi N) Aug. 30 Yellow Creek, 500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Of 2 birds singing in the alder woodland along a small tributary of the Trinity River, I collected one. The other continued to sing for a while, then started a series of nasal calls, slow at first - gaining in speed of repetition or in pitch toward the end. After this it sang a few times then was silent for 10 min. or more before resuming. The "woodland" here is of 60-80 ft. tall trees in groves or strips up to 150 yards in width, but with cleared areas with brush around them. The vireos were noted only in the tree canopy. Aug. 28, { - 1 to 3 were heard singing or seen in the 29, 31 mixed woodland, orchard area just S of the Sep. 2 above locality. Aug. 27 - I was heard singing in Tan Oak - Madrone - Douglas fir forest on the N. facing slope of Coon Cr. canyon Sep. 6-10 Red Mt. Ridge, 2-3 1/2 mi. NNW of the peak, 5300 ft.-5500 ft., 15-13 mi. S Hayford, Trinity Co., Calif. - 1 or more seen mostly (or heard singing) almost every day. They were in open forest with some Harry or Brewer Oak admixed.
