Hylocichla mustelina
Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif.
Aug. 16 - Caught 2 in my small mammal traps set under
Rubus spectabilis, R. parviflorus, & Sambucus racemosa
thickets just N. of Putler Creek in a mixed spruce
& alder forest. One was in fresh plumage, [illegible]
and was saved (= #31); the other was in juvenile
plumage. The species had been heard & seen
commonly in this and other similar settings throughout
our stay here. One bird was giving a rather
indefinite attempt at song near our camp last
evening.
Aug. 9-19 Habitats in which this species was noted were:
(1) Spruce-alder forest with thicket understory or border
(as above); (2) Redwood-Towland fir forest; (3) alder-
maple-spruce wet forest; (4) 3-year old burn
near the stream (alder & Rubus shrubs).
Aug. 28 (1mi N) Willow Creek, 450 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
one heard calling & glimpsed in low alder shrub
at border of alder woodland & dry open scrub
land. Both the low "whit" & louder "wheeze" heard.
