Cogswell 1949 Turdus migratorius Aug. 9-19 Beg Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. only a few were seen - in the open pasture and border of Spruce-alder & alder-maple forests or the Riparian woodland. 3 were also seen, on Aug. 16 at the grassy ground at the ranch at S. end of road on 1st ridge E. of Lagoon, 538'. Aug. 20-26 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - Several (2 or 3) were about our camp almost daily. The spring nearby, with the only water for several miles along the series of "balls" on this ridge, is probably the attraction. The species was seen nowhere else in these "ball" hills. Aug. 25 Coyote Peak, 2800 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Several, apparently a family of young + 1 or 2 ads., were foraging under the maples & madrones & Tan Oaks near the large spring on the W. side of the peak. I collected a F & Mullein got an immature. Aug. 28, 30, 31 1/2 mi. N Willow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. a few were seen in the orchard & adjacent Blackberry & Coffeeberry bushes & Bay trees in the Trinity River valley here [see Journal]. Sep. 4 Branner Mtn., 3700 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - 2 heard calling in open pine forest [see Journal for description] Sep. 7, 8 (2 1/2 mi. NNW) Red Mtn., 5300 ft., 14 mi. S Hayfork, Trinity Co., Calif. 1 or 2, respectively, heard & seen on these dates in open pine forest - the only ones noted in this area except for 1 on S. Dubabella Mtn., 1 mile N of here on 8th.
