Cogswell 1949 Chamaea fasciata E. of Big Lagoon, 500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Aug. 15 about 5 heard and 1 p.m. squealed up to within a few feet of me in the "chaparral" on the first ridge east of the lagoon. The brush here is a good enough chaparral, although composed of ferns, & azaleas to a greater extent than any I have ever seen. on this p.m. visit, this species was the only bird voice apparent. Aug 8-19 This species was found in all upland habi- tats containing a dense shrubbery, i.e., all those listed in the Journal except the grassland, wet pasture, march & lagoon. It was least common in the dense Redwood forest and in the wet maple-alder forest; most common in the Aug. 15 area (see above, and Journal, p.) Aug. 21 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. 9:00 a.m. Heard at least 2 ?? & 1 ? singing from a NE. facing slope on the generally NW. facing side of ??? French Camp Ridge about 2/3 mile 5W of camp. None were heard from the much larger area of brush, which is seemingly very similar, on the NW. facing slopes. I make my way down thru the brush to where I could call the birds up by imi- tating the song of the ? and by squeaking. Two (No 44 & 45) were obtained within 30 yards and 10 min. of one another. The vegetation is of Lithocarpus densiflora and somewhat less of Castanopsis chrysophylla, both as tall?
