Cogswell 1949 Certhia familiaris Aug. 8-19 Big Lagoon Humboldt Co., Calif. Recorded on 5 different days -- in spruce-elder, maple. elder, and Redwood-Hemlock-Lowland Oak forests. one was heard singing on the 12th. Aug. 20-26 Trend Camp 3100 ft. Humboldt Co., Calif. Single individuals were recorded on 2 days, 1 of them singing on the 21st. The forest type is Douglas Fir -- Incense Cedar -- Tan Oak. Aug 27- Sep. 5 3 mi N Yellow Creek 700 ft. Humboldt Co., Calif. 1 or 2 noted on each day afield near our camp in Loon Creek Canyon, one was heard singing on the 27th. These were all in Douglas Fir - Madrone forest or Elder Maple forest (collected in later on 3rd) one was seen in the walnut orchard in Trinity River valley on Aug 29. [see journal] Sep. 6 (2 1/2 mi NWW) Red Mtn, 5400 ft., 14 mi S Hayfork Trinity Co., Calif. One was foraging on steller (15-20ft.) Harry oaks + in somewhat higher Jeffrey Pines on the S. facing side of the ridge here. I shot it, but feathers from whole belly area slipped badly by 5:00 p.m. & it was discarded. 3+ mtn. chickadees were foraging near it. Sep. 7-10 Creepers were heard or seen, (or 2 at a time, frequently in the White Fir - Incense Cedar - Pine forest of N-facing slopes & deeper canyons, and were noted less frequently in the open pine forest nearby (within 2 mi. of locality as written above). Songs were heard on the 9th. & 10th.
