Sitta canadensis
1
Aug 8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. NONE heard.
There are many suitable habitats here - or
so it would seem; and the absence of these
caracteristically coniferous forest species here
needs to be explained.
Aug. 21
8:30 a.m.
French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
Collected one from Douglas fir (live) at border
of burned over area now regrown to Tanbark
oak & Chinquapin, and also bordering on a "bell"
Two came to my imitation of a Pygmy owl, to-
gether with many Zonotrichia leucophrys, Junco
oregonus, etc.. The nuthatches went into the
dead trees adjacent to the live ones, but did
not stay there long.
Aug. 20-26 Several were heard (and/or seen) daily about
the camp in Douglas fir - Incense Cedar - Tan
Oak forest, and elsewhere in the region in
all coniferous forest types (=Douglas Fir here).
They were also noted on the dead Douglas Firs
well within the burned over area, with
dense shrub cover beneath them.
Sep. 1,3-4 Brannan Mtn. 1200 - 3950 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
noted at every stop made in this altitude
range. much commoner in the open pine forest
near the summit than in the denser Douglas
Fir forest at middle altitudes. Groups of 5 to
7 birds, apparently family groups, were common
at the higher altitudes. They were calling almost
constantly.
