Coggswell 1949 Sitta carolinensis French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Aug. 21 One seen & shot at but missed, in Douglas Fir forest edge by old burn and "Bald" just SW of camp. It was foraging in the firs and on dead trees; but did not respond to my owl call or squeaks as did Sitta canadensis or other species. Aug. 24 Two (both in full plumage) seen in forest of tall Douglas Firs, tan oaks & moist understory shrubs just NE of camp. I collected one of them (#60) -> Both of these records show occurrence in Douglas Fir forests, whereas the species would be more expected in the Garry Oak woodland bordering the Bald Hills in Coyote Peak - Schoolhouse Peak areas. These were visited on Aug. 22, 23, 25; but none of this species was found. Sep. 6 (3 mi. NW) Red Mtn., 5300 ft. 14 mi S Hayfork, Trinity Co., Calif. I collected one from trunk of a Jeffrey x Yellow Pine (hybrid) in an open forest of Picea + P. jeffreyi with much shrub understory. There are a few small Quercus garryana trees & many in low shrub form -- nothing else deciduous here. Sep. 9 $ (1 mi ESE of above locality) - I heard in open pine forest near a manzanita - Ceanothus cordulatus thicket.
