Cogswell 1949 Parus rufescens aug 8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. abundant & widely distributed. Many were seen & heard daily in all forest types visited (see journal). and I on aug.17 in a small Douglas fir" isolated group at the N. end of the first ridge E. of the lagoon - in an area surrounded by "chaparral." aug.19-26 French Camp, 3100 ft., Coyote Peak, Schoolhouse Peak & vicinity, 2800-3000 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. several noted on each trip into any forest type. They were apparently absent from the Barry oak woodland & kept near the border of conifer forest. However, they ranged all thru the burned over areas which are now covered with pin-oak - chinkapin shrubs only. Sep. 1 1 mi. WSW Brannan mtn., 3500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. in the Douglas fir - yellow pine - incense cedar forest at the border of "Johnson Prairie" (which is a small dry grassy spot) a flock of 5 or 6 of this species & 1 Red-breasted nuthatch came to my squirrel. Collected 1 chickadee. Sep. 3,4 Brannan mtn., 2000-3500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.- sufficient Heard at intervals as we drove up the Three Creek & Brannan mtn. roads thru Douglas fir forest. None found in open pine forest on summit. aug.26 2 Sep. 5 3 mi. N Willow Creek, 700 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Fairly common in Douglas fir & mixed forests, but less numerous than in the more solid Douglas fir of the canyons on Brannan mtn.
