Cyanocitta stelleri Aug. 19-26 French Camp, 3100 ft., and Coyote Peak nw to "Ball Hills", 2200 - 3200 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Common in all forests containing conifers; seen also in Barry oak woodland (but never more than 1/4 mi. from conifer forest) and in burnalover Douglas fir forest now regrown to tan oak & Shinquapin. Those near our camp frequently gave the squeal resembling a red-tailed hawk's call - more frequently than I have ever heard Jays give it. Aug. 23 Schoolhouse Creek, 2500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. At 5:15 a.m. a loud chorus of scolds from about 10-12 individuals came from the deep Douglas Fir - maple - Laurel forest here. After some 15 min. this ceased & Jays came trooping out into the small plum orchard. One was seen pecking at a plum. I collected 2 of these birds from the orchard (#S 54, 55). Aug. 27 - Sep. 6 Willow Creek area, 400-800 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Fairly common in all forest types containing Douglas Fir; also noted in its maple-older canyon bottom forest and in oak-madrono forest on the S. facing foothill slopes. Sep. 1,3,4 Brannan Mtn., 2500-3957 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Much commoner in forest & clearings (as near Johnson Prairie) at higher altitudes: 1 group of ? seen there. 2 collected on 4/24 from open pine forest along ridge W of the peak. Sep. 6 - [illegible]
