Cogswell 1949 Cyanocitta stelleri Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. Aug. 12 - In the dense alder-spruce-maple forest along Ritter Creek just at the base of the hill N. of camp I was unsuccessful in speeking out one at the first attempt, but an hour later it responded - and was collected (= # 26.) Aug. 13 along the east shore of the lagoon just N. of the highway (US-101) bridge I shot 2 out of 3 birds which came to my squeak. They were both in Rices sitchowais trees 25 - 35 ft. high, which form the forest border here fronting on the lagoon's gravel beach. Shrubs (Ryus fusius, Carothus thyriiflorus, et al) are interspersed with the young spruces and tall spruce trees (only species?) form the forest just a few yards away. One of them was so badly mangled it had to be discarded, the other was prepared as # 24. Aug. 18 Two were heard in a thicket of 15-20 ft. alders along Maple Creek about 1 mi. above the bridge S. of our camp. - They were at least 1/3 mi. from any coniferous timber other than stump sprouts of redwood in this burned over area. Aug 8-19 SUMMARY: This species was noted in all habitats except the open fields, marsh, lagoon, and chaparral. I even crossed the 3 year old burn thru the dead trees + young alders and ranged into the higher chaparral near the forest border. From 1 to 3 (5 on 1 day) were recorded on most 1/2 day field trips.
