Aug. 8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif.
numbers of
a small
colony foraged over all habitats -- even above
twelve redwood forest. Their perching headquarters
was, however, in a group of tall dead trees in
the bit of dry pasture along maple creek valley
by our camp. One (?) was observed at the
abandoned ranch at 550' altitude, 1/2 mile E. of
the lagoon, on the W. face of the first ridge.
A larger flock, estimated at 30 individuals
was flying about, calling, a perching in the
tall dead trees of the 3-year old burn 1 1/2 mi.
inland from the lagoon along maple creek on
Aug. 18.
The lowest perch any martins were seen
to occupy was the top of a 1 1/2-foot diameter
piling about 15 ft. high -- at the border of the marsh.
