Contopus ruficollis
Aug.8-19.
Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. Fairly
common in spruce-alder forest, Riparian
(alder, willow) woodland & border of these with grassland. Also noted in Spruce-fir forest
and in 3-year old burn. Full "pee-yeeer" calls given all thru this period.
Aug.21
French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - I heard
calling in Douglas fir forest.
Aug.24
I seen together in Douglas fir-Tan Oak forest
with considerable understory.
This species has been unexpectedly rare at this camp.
Aug.29-30
1/2 mi. N Yellow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
one adult, giving full "song" ("peeeewr"), and
one young one apparently begging food from the adult with a wheezy "preeee". I did not see the adult feed it, but the 2 were followed thru several adjacent walnut trees of an old orchard.
Aug.31
I collected 1 (*92) from the Bay-Cottonwood-Oak woodland strip bordering the Trinity River near this same orchard.
