Cogswell 1949 Dendrocopos albolarvatus 5300 14 mi. S Hayfork Sep.6 (2 1/2 mi NW) Red Mtn 5300 ft. Trinity Co. Calif. 8:10 a.m. I chased one of this species from tree to tree, going from SW facing slope over onto NE. It alighted only near the top of the trunks of the taller Jeffrey Pines. It called the rattled, dry "jik - kik - kik" every time it flew & sometimes wh perked. Its flights were about 50-70 yards each, and I was not able to get a shot at it but had several brief good views of it in flight, noting the white head & wing patch. Sep.8 (2 by N&W) Red Mtn, 5300 ft. 14 mi. S Hayfork, Trinity Co. Calif. - I collected a ? from trunk of a tall yellow x Jeffrey pine by "Smoky Creek Spring # 2" which is at the head of the East Fork of that creek & near the site where, Puffing Owl was observed [see act. of this species]
