Cogswell 1949 Dendrocapos pubescens aug 8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. Distinctly less common than D. villosus. Habitats observed in were: spruce- alder forest; willow - alder riparian woodland ; 3- year old burn (on dead trees) ; a few long "whiny" calls were heard during this period. aug. 22- 23 Schoolhouse Peak, 2500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. one heard as I passed by in car thru Harry oak woodland - on 22nd. at about 6:15 a.m on 23rd I found an immature F in this same general area + collected it. [see journal, p. 81]. The stomach of this specimen (#59) was nearly full of insect remains, including some grasshopper legs. Grasshoppers are exceedingly abundant in the "prairies" here + are probably serving as food for many species with other types of diet under natural [illegible] circumstances. aug. 25 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - one was heard calling in the Douglas Fir - Incense Cedar forest , with small tan oaks + thimblespin, near our camp. aug. 30 2/3 mi. N Willow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. . I heard calling from mixed woodland in river valley [see journal]. sep. 3 2 1/2 mi. N Willow Creek, 500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - I heard calling from Blackoak. Harry oak- madrone forest bordering shrub land. sep 8 S. Oubabella mtn. [illegible], 5500 ft., 13 mi. S Hayfork, Trinity Co., Calif. - one seen (a shot at, but missed) in Harry oak - Jeffrey Pine - Incense cedar woodland of 15-30 ft trees on ridge top.
