Cagwell 1949 Dendrocopos villosus aug.8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif., Common, but found singly in all habitats with trees (including pure redwood forest). It was distinctly Common in the 3. year old burn with its many dead trees than in other habitats. The only calls heard from them during this period were single loud "peek's, or occasionally a short rapid repetition of the same, up to 3 or 4 at a time. a few woodpecker drummings heard in the burned over area were attributed & this species. aug.20-26 and "Ball Wells" NW of Coyote Peak French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. - Several seen or heard daily. They were found in Douglas Fir forest most commonly only sparsely, less so in the burned area (trees long dead), and only a few in the oak woodland. aug.27 3 mi. N Yellow Creek Humboldt Co., Calif. On the Madrone - Tan Oak - Douglas Fir forest on the N- facing slope of loon Creek Canyon, 2 were heard (1 seen). I also saw 2 in the madrone - Black Oak - Harry Oak forest on the S. facing slope & collected one of them. They were, except for a few chickadees, the only birds evi- dent in the latter habitat in late a.m. aug.28-Sep.4- The species was noted frequently in this same general area. Sep.1 - W. slope Brannon Mtn., c. 3000 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. I was heard in Tan Oak - Madrone - Douglas Fir forest.
