Balanophora formicivora
Aug.19-26 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt C., Calif. - 2 or more heard or seen near our camp daily.
Their main range was down slope in the burned over area with many tall dead trees and Tan oak - Chingrin pine brush [see Bullion's notes on that area].
Aug.27 3 mi. N Willow Creek, 700 ft., Humboldt C., Calif. - 2 or more were heard, 1 of them seen, in Tan Oak - Black Oak - Douglas Fir - Madrone forest on the W end of the ridge S of Coon Creek.
There is a strip near this ridge top where many trees have been felled (but not Tan Oaks) so the woodpeckers were staying near it.
Sep.1 1 mi. W Branner Mtn. 3200 ft., Humboldt C., Calif. - In a slash area with many Tan Oaks and some Douglas Fir still standing Bullion & I distinctly heard the "wreck-it" call note of this species.
