Cogswell 1949 Dryocopus pileatus 3 Sep. 8 (2 ½ mi NNW) Red Mtn., 5300 ft. 14 mi. S Hayfork, Trinity Co., Calif. The shrill 6 or 7 notated call, as described above, was heard from the vicinity of our camp — in white fir — incense cedar — Jeffrey pine forest. Sep. 10 The same call was heard repeatedly this a.m.; s finally about 10 a.m. I saw [illegible] a J giving it from yellow x Jeffrey Pines about an open serpentine rock & brushy slope ½ mi. W of our camp.
