Cogswell 1949 Dryocopus pileatus Aug. 18 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. One was seen about 1 mi. up Maple Creek valley from the lagoon. It flew across from the S., slighted near the top of a dead spruce tree; meanwhile call- ing constantly a repetition "wick - wick - WICK- - WICK - : - -" etc., varying both in intensity & slightly in pitch. It soon flew back again to into the 3-year old burned area; but was not noted there again when I reached it 1/2 hour later. Aug. 21 French Camp, 3100 ft, Humboldt Co., Calif. One was heard, giving the same call as described above, and glimpsed as it flew across the burned over area near our camp. [See Journal p. 75 for description of area, habitat] Aug. 27 3 mi. N Willow Creek, 100 ft. Humboldt Co., Calif. 9:00 a.m. Found 2 individuals (pair?) close together in Tan oak - madrone - Douglas Fir forest on N. facing slope of Look Creek Canyon (see Journal for description). They were calling occasionally, the series of 5 or 6 shrill notes resembling the Flicker's call, but dropping in pitch at the end. The ?[which was] seen well) once gave a longer series with variations in pitch & loudness as described on Aug. 18. I also watched it drum on the dead & partly insect riddled core of a live Tan Oak about 20 ft. from the ground.
